A family affair – how senior SNP politicians are linked

Politics can be a game of obsessions, especially at the highest level. It can become all-enveloping for some of the participants, in any party. This sometimes seems more so for the SNP than for other parties. But then, they might argue, theirs is a higher calling – the call to national self-determination and independence.

I thought it might be interesting to see how that belief plays out in the relationships between senior SNP politicians. The map of relationships above is a first attempt to do that. It plots two separate but sometimes overlapping sorts of relationship – family, and business/other connections. The ‘family’ connections are, obviously, confined to where there is a political connection. To make it manageable the core of the map is confined to the two senior groups of elected MSPs and MPs – the Holyrood cabinet, and the party’s senior Westminster spokespeople.

The map is intended to be factual and the information in it is drawn entirely from publically available sources, cited on the diagram. It’s a work in progress so if there are any inaccuracies please let me know and I will correct them. I would also be interested in any relevant information I have missed. Let me know and I will add it. Thanks.

  1. Jane Maguire says:

Isn’t Jennifer Dempsie supposed to be the romantic partner of Angus Robertson? This is one of the calls of cronyism about the T in the Park debacle!
